Rubicon Publishing creates educational textbooks for a variety of topics and grade levels. The current series of books the company has been working on are Science and Social Studies textbooks for American students from kindergarten to grade 5. Each grade has three levels of reading comprehension. The two books that I have chosen to highlight are ones I created one called :Energy:"and the other is "The Ten Most Outstanding American Women". From a design perspective, each page needed to be distinctly reflective of the information located on it, while also as a whole making the subject matter engaging and compelling for the young readers..
These books tend to be text heavy so there is a design challenge to balance visuals with text, making sure the design stays constant from page to page but also ensuring that pages are all different and unique for each person they feature. There were other distinct challenges and constraints to think about in making this, and other books, good, relevant pictures, especially of obscure or older people and events, and obscure or abstract concepts, are sometimes hard to come across.
Special attention was made to create visually engaging images that uses a combination of high-impact visuals and effective literacy strategies to engage all students and all reading levels.
